One of the great therapeutic modalities we use in treatment at The Foundry Treatment Center is the ALPHA-STIM. This type of technology helps individuals with recovery by relieving pain, anxiety, depression and insomnia.
The Alpha-Stim is a clinically proven medical device that begins at the electron level and allows a person’s cells to return to their natural functioning state. This technology works by changing the electrical and chemical activity of certain nerve cells in the brainstem. It can amplify activity in some neurological systems and diminish activity in others.
The Alpha-Stim focuses on the “alpha” state of your brain, which can be measured on an electroencephalogram recording.
In a healthy alpha state, stress-effects are reduced, as well as agitation. A patient’s mood is more stabilized, and regulation of both sensation and perception of particular types of pain are improved.
When treating anxiety, insomnia, and depression, a current is applied with easy-to-use clips that attach on the ear lobes for at least 20 minutes several times per week, or on an as-needed basis. Results can be felt immediately for anxiety, but can take up to three weeks to see a significant change in insomnia and depression.
When treating pain with the Alpha-Stim, two wands or attachable electrodes are placed directly at the site of the pain. The Alpha-Stim sends a microcurrent waveform signaling the cells to significantly reduce the sensation of pain without medication. Results can be felt instantaneously.

Ruth Spector is a registered nurse who grew up in Grand Forks, North Dakota, and went to college in Bemidji, Minnesota before moving to Steamboat Springs in 2000. She worked as a nurse at The Memorial Hospital in Craig prior to joining the Foundry. She enjoys the outdoor activities Northwestern Colorado has to offer and spending time with her husband and 4-year-old daughter.
