No matter where you stand on the issue of gun control, one thing has been made abundantly clear over and over again, and most recently in Parkland, Florida: the United States has a problem with mass shootings, and it is a problem that is not going away. The atrocity on February 14 marked “the 18th shooting in a U.S. school so far this year” and “the second-greatest loss of life from a shooting at a U.S. public school,” after the massacre at Sandy Hook in 2012.

Map identifies the locations of all mass shootings in the U.S. in 2018, not only school-specific shootings.

Also clear is the alarming trend among the perpetrators of these horrors: the history of mental illness. In Parkland, teachers and the FBI were alerted about disturbing social media posts made by the shooter. He was so clearly in need of treatment or intervention that after the shooting, students echoed the eerie sentiment that “everyone predicted it.”

Mental illness is not the fault of the person who has it. When a person suffers from depression or anxiety, he or she deserves effective treatment. But with mental illness, the medications that are prescribed can sometimes add fuel to the fire. An earlier blog post on this site outlines the side effects of commonly prescribed antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications – everything from aggression to hallucinations to suicidal thoughts.

While it cannot be claimed that medications are the primary cause for mass killings, it is worth noting that safe and effective treatment for mental illness does exist; there is help that does not cause further mental distress and horrific side effects; there is Alpha-Stim®.

Alpha-Stim is an FDA cleared, non-invasive medical device that treats depression and anxiety safely and effectively, without risk of addiction or lasting side effects. Relief is attainable in just 20 to 60 minutes per day, and Alpha-Stim has been proven to work better than medications. Alpha-Stim is available by prescription in the United States, and over the counter in other countries.

What makes Alpha-Stim different is its safety. In over 100 clinical research studies, less than 1% of patients reported mild and self-limiting side effects, including dizziness (6 cases or 0.07%), skin irritation/electrode burns (6 cases or 0.07%), and headaches (9 cases or 0.10%).

Since 1981, Alpha-Stim technology has helped millions of people worldwide. Even people with the most severe anxiety and depression such as Service Members and veterans, and advanced cancer patients, have shown substantial improvements in their mood, often from the very first treatment.

Our country has a terrifying problem, and it’s time to talk about a sustainable solution. Depression and anxiety are real illnesses that deserve real help. Patients with mental illness can at times feel desperate for relief and may turn a blind eye to adverse effects in the hope that the benefit will outweigh the risk. With Alpha-Stim, there is no need to avert your gaze from the risk. With Alpha-Stim, the relief does not come at a heavy cost.

It’s time to talk about how we treat mental illness.  Get started today.
