A cancer diagnosis is devastating. Whether you are newly grappling with the disease or have been battling it over the long term, there is nothing easy about having cancer.

One of the things that makes cancer and its treatment so daunting is that it can feel like an uphill battle. The disease itself makes you feel sick, but treatments can make you feel terrible as well. And all the while, your mental health is in for a shock, as you try to make sense of all the changes that are happening and the choices you and your loved ones must make.

It’s important to remember that you are more than your cancer. While the disease may be the focus of you and your medical team’s attention, you can still do things to allay your discomfort, both physically and mentally.

Physical Effects of Cancer & Treatments

Grappling with a cancer diagnosis is daunting; it is normal to feel overwhelmed.

The prevalence of pain in people with cancer is high. Roughly half of people who are newly diagnosed with cancer experience pain; this number increases to nearly 75% of patients as the disease progresses to advanced stages.¹ Some of this pain is caused by the cancer itself, when a tumor presses on the nerves and tissues around it. And if you are currently undergoing treatment, you have likely realized that the side effects of treatments can be downright miserable.

Chemotherapy, radiation, and surgeries and other procedures can all contribute to pain. Additionally, doctors will sometimes prescribe medications to prevent a decrease in white blood cells after treatment. Known as growth factor drugs or colony-stimulating factors, these “help the body produce more WBCs which are made in the bone marrow. Because the bone marrow activity is higher with these drugs, bone pain may occur.”²

On top of all that, you may experience more common types of pain, such as muscle aches or headaches, as a result of the stress you are undergoing.

The Mental & Emotional Impact of Cancer

All of this physical distress can inevitably take a toll on your mental health as well. Depression affects roughly 20% of cancer patients – a rate that is four times as high as the general population.³ A new study found that for cancer patients with severe symptoms, “depression occurs in a toxic blend of high levels of anxiety, traumatic stress, impaired day-to-day functioning and significant pain and other physical symptoms.”

Regardless of how you feel physically, it is to be expected that you will face stress and anxiety about having cancer. What will happen next? How are your friends and family coping? Are you making the right choices? Will life ever feel normal again? Anxiety can stem from both the big-picture, long term concerns that come with a major illness, and from smaller, daily hurdles and tasks. It’s normal to feel anxiety around treatments that you know will make you feel unwell, and about the results of diagnostic tests. This distress can cause you to have trouble sleeping, which then begins a vicious cycle: insomnia exacerbates your depression and anxiety, which then make it harder for you to sleep.

Finding Relief with Alpha-Stim

Facing cancer and its treatment is a daunting task. But as a patient, you have more options than ever before when it comes to how you choose to manage the disease. You also have choices when it comes to handling all the side effects and symptoms.

MD Anderson Cancer Center

The MD Anderson Cancer Center conducted a study on the effectiveness of Alpha-Stim for cancer patients

Alpha-Stim® is a medical device that, for decades, has been proven to safely and effectively treat anxiety, insomnia, depression, and pain. Its effectiveness has been backed by over 100 independent clinical research studies. But most importantly for those affected by cancer, a recent MD Anderson Cancer Center study found dramatic improvement among cancer patients, specifically, who treated their symptoms with Alpha-Stim.

Published in the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management, the study found a decrease of more than 50% in depression, anxiety, and pain among cancer patients; insomnia symptoms were reduced by 41%.

Professor Sriram Yennu, of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, spoke of the results of the Alpha-Stim study in a recent documentary, The Brain Electric. As Professor Yennu explains, opioids can be effective in treating pain in cancer patients, but they also cause many side effects and are highly addictive – and this is why doctors and researchers hope to find better ways to treat pain in their patients. Upon concluding the trial with Alpha-Stim, “all the patients said that they had full satisfaction,” Yennu reports. “They had no difficulty, and it was easy to use.” And while he was not surprised by the safety of the device, since it is FDA cleared, “the effects, in terms of improvement of symptoms, did surprise me. We were anticipating some benefit, but not the benefit we saw.”

But what is Alpha-Stim? It’s an FDA cleared cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) device. It works by sending a microcurrent of electricity to the brain through small electrodes worn on your earlobes. The patented waveform of electricity quickly and safely restores balance to your brainwaves, making you feel better both physically and mentally.

Incorporating Alpha-Stim Into Your Treatment Plan

Since Alpha-Stim is not a drug, there is no risk of addiction or lasting side effects, or interactions with any other treatments you may be undergoing. There is no risk of overuse with Alpha-Stim, so you can use it as often as you wish – but since results are cumulative over time, you’ll likely find that you need it less and less.
