Alpha-Stim Proven to Relieve Anxiety, Insomnia, and Depression Among First Responders

Firefighters, EMTs, police officers, and other crisis response professionals are inevitably and repeatedly exposed to traumatic events. Over time, the cumulative effects of these stressors, combined with a schedule disruptive to normal sleep patterns, leads to adverse effects on both the physical and mental wellbeing of first responders. A new study published in Jacobs Journal of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science has found that Alpha-Stim®, a non-invasive, non-drug medical device, is highly successful at relieving anxiety, depression, sleep, and pain among first responders.

These professionals are often hesitant to seek treatment. Some do not want the risk of side effects that come with medications; others fear retribution, stigmatization, and being negatively labeled by their peers.¹ Cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) treatments offer a safe and discreet method for these professionals to effectively improve their quality of life by reducing anxiety and stress, improving mood and quality of sleep, and relieving pain.

In 2018, 86 law enforcement professionals participated in a study to determine the effectiveness of Alpha-Stim. Participants used the CES device for 20 to 60 minutes daily over the course of six weeks; they utilized a smartphone application to measure baseline levels and changes in mood, sleep, and pain. Participants reported their perceived levels of discomfort for each indication on a scale from 0 to 10.

Upon completion of the study, statistical analysis revealed statistically highly significant (p < .001) for anxiety, insomnia, depression, and pain. The effect size values were greater than two standard deviations for all outcome measures, demonstrating a high level of improvement from baseline to posttest measures.

Stress and burnout are legitimate concerns among today’s first responders and law enforcement professionals, forcing many to suffer in silence from anxiety, insomnia, depression, and pain. Alpha-Stim is an effective treatment method for these essential professionals, bringing significant relief in as little as 20 minutes a few times per week and allowing them to perform optimally and enjoy a higher quality of life at the same time.
