Mental Health of America Study Reports 88,000 New Cases

The latest report by Mental Health America (MHA) contains some sobering statistics and confirms what we have all been thinking: 2020 has been one of the most stressful and challenging years on record.

A recent report from MHA shows staggering numbers of Americans struggling with anxiety and depression.

MHA’s June 2nd report summarizes the results of its May 2020 survey, which included over 211,000 responses. It provides a snapshot of how Americans are feeling and coping since the coronavirus (COVID-19) made national headlines. The report paints a bleak picture, with over 88,000 people struggling with anxiety and depression as a direct result of the pandemic. The MHA’s findings are consistent with the US Census Bureau’s alarming anxiety and depression statistics published in May.

To put the MHA’s numbers in perspective: in 2019, the prevalence rate was 18.1% for anxiety and 6.7% for depression, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America. What the MHA report illustrates is that 230% more Americans are living with anxiety compared to a year ago.

Anxiety and depression are risk factors for suicide, and the MHA’s report shows that more than 21,000 survey respondents with depression had thoughts of suicide or self-harm on more than half of all days. MHA President and CEO Paul Gionfriddo remarked, “Our May screening numbers were unprecedented…the numbers…demonstrate not only that there is not yet any relief from the mental health impacts of the pandemic, but that the impacts actually seem to be spreading and accelerating.”

Certain subgroups of people, such as students, are harder hit by anxiety and depression.

MHA’s report highlights that certain subgroups of the population are experiencing particularly high levels of distress, including LGBTQ, caregivers, Veterans and Service Members, students, and people with preexisting chronic medical conditions. The impact of COVID-19 has been felt the most by young people, with close to 90% of those under 25 years old showing moderate to severe depression, and 80% reporting moderate to severe anxiety.

The news is unsettling – but there is hope. The ADAA reports that anxiety and depression are highly treatable conditions, and encourages all Americans to seek treatment. Symptoms of depression and anxiety can have a profound impact on your quality of life, but the right treatment can bring real relief. You do not have to accept suffering as the new normal. You also do not have to accept medications, and all the potential side effects that come with them, as your only path to feeling better.

If you’re struggling with anxiety and depression as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, you should know that there are non-drug ways to feel better. Alpha-Stim® is an FDA cleared medical device, available by prescription, that is proven to be fast, safe, and effective at treating anxiety and depression.

Alpha-Stim is easy to use in the comfort of your own home – perfect if you’re still working from home! The treatment is simple: clip an electrode onto each of your earlobes, sit back, and relax while the device transmits a tiny and painless current of electricity to your brain in a modality called cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES.) Alpha-Stim’s patented waveform restores balance to your brainwaves, making you feel better fast. Treatment sessions take only 20 minutes, yet results are long-lasting and often immediate.

Medications often require you to continually increase your dosage, as your body adapts to them. With Alpha-Stim, on the other hand, results are cumulative over time. In other words, the more often you use it, the less you’ll need it. And since Alpha-Stim is not a drug, there is no risk of addiction or withdrawal, and it is safe to use in conjunction with other treatment modalities. Alpha-Stim is backed by decades of experience and more than 100 clinical research studies; patients rave about their success. It’s safe for use on people of all ages, from children to the elderly.

With a recent Gallup Poll showing that over 50% of Americans are concerned about their financial situation, we want to help ease the burden and stress you may already be feeling. That’s why we encourage you to try Alpha-Stim for 30 days – if you aren’t impressed by how much better you feel, you can return it.

For most of us, life today looks completely different than it did at the outset of 2020. No matter how much or how little the pandemic has affected you on a personal level, there is no shame in seeking treatment for depression or anxiety. If you are struggling, you are not alone.
